1. John Finney , son of Unknown and Unknown .
By 1889, John Finney is noted on the marriage certificate of his son Arthur as being deceased. It is also noted that he worked as a Labourer. This ties in with the information passed down from Arthur's daughter Amelia who said that her father was adopted as his parents had died when he was young.
Family lore has it that John Finney was in the army and that both he and his wife died whilst abroad. John's son Arthur was still young at the time and was brought back to the U.K. to be educated; he was adopted by a friend of John's who was possibly also in the army.
There is a John Finney born in 1835, who is the son of Luke and Margaret who were living at 191 New Street, Longton at the time of the 1841 census. This is possible match for Arthur's father, although it is a mere suggestion at this stage.
