11. Ann Jane Walklet (James6, Thomas1) was born in 1862 and died in 1866.

12. Rachel Walklet (James6, Thomas1) was born in 1864 in Wolstanton, Staffordshire and died in 1866 in Wolstanton, Staffordshire.

The Free BMD Project lists the birth of Rachel in the first quarter of 1864 in the Wolstanton district. The death of Rachel Walklet at the age of two (Wolstanton district; 6b/91) in the first quarter of 1866 is also listed.

13. Thomas Frederick Walklet (James6, Thomas1) was born on 13 Feb 1866 in Burslem, Staffordshire, died on 3 Oct 1925 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga, OH, and was buried on 6 Oct 1925 in Lakeview Cemetery, Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Oh.

Thomas Frederick was born at 75 Newcastle Street, Burslem. He emigrated to America as a baby with his parents James and Amelia. During his life, Thomas moved several times but ended up in Cleveland, Ohio where he died. He was a secretery at the YMCA, but did many other jobs before that

One of Thomas' grandsons wrote that Thomas enjoyed playing pool, and that this probably arose from the pool tables at his father James' tavern. There is a photo which Thomas' grandson has kindly sent to me which has is entitled "Tom Walklet getting ready to hit the ball" - the notes with the photo state that his grandson was led to believe that the photo was of the tavern run by Tom's father James, although the photo lab stamp on the front is from Ohio. Tom's grandson states though that it still may be in the tavern in New Jersey.

Thomas was the YMCA secretary for pool tournaments in Cleveland. During their moves from Trenton to Cleveland, Thomas and his family lived in East Liverpool, Ohio which was also a pottery centre. Thomas continued in some part of the pottery business but apparently did not continue this on his move to Cleveland, Ohio.

Thomas married Sarah Ann Robinson , daughter of Joseph Robinson and Matilda Longshaw , on 10 Aug 1886 in Chambersburg, Mercer, NJ. Sarah was born on 8 Apr 1867 in Hanley, Stoke-On-Trent, Staffordshire, died on 23 Mar 1943 in Franklin Co., Ohio, U.S., and was buried on 26 Mar 1943 in Lakeview Cemetery, Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Oh.

One of Sarah's grandsons recalls that he met her a few times when he was young, and that Sarah was hard of hearing and carried a big box with an ear phone attached.

The 1930 U.S. census lists "Sarah A. Walklet" as being 50 years old and living in New Jersey. This would suggest that Sarah born sometime around 1879, although this would not tie in with her marriage date. It is more likely that Sarah was 60 years old at the time of the census, as this age would be more sympathetic with that of her husband Thomas Frederick Walklet.

Sarah (eventually?) lived with her daughter Marvel and died at Marvel's home in Columbus, Ohio.

Children from this marriage were:

+ 32 F    i. Bertha Walklet was born on 20 Apr 1887 in New Jersey and died in 1887.

+ 33 M    ii. Frederick Mercer Walklet was born on 17 Jun 1888 and died on 11 Oct 1968.

+ 34 F    iii. Ethel May Walklet was born on 14 Sep 1889 in New Milford, Litchfield, Ct and died in 1979.

+ 35 M    iv. Frank Thomas Walklett was born on 22 Jul 1893 in New Jersey and died in 1961.

+ 36 F    v. Marvel Amelia Rachel Ann Walklet was born on 20 Aug 1896 in East Liverpool, Columbiana, Oh and died on 6 Jan 1971 in Grandview, Franklin, Oh.

+ 37 M    vi. Elwood Edison Walklet was born on 16 Mar 1898 in Ohio and died in 1930.

14. John James Walklet (James6, Thomas1) was born in 1867 on voyage back to England from NJ and died in 1936.

John Walklet moved his family back to Trenton in 1900. John's son James wrote that there was another family in the Trenton area who originated from the Potteries who were no relation and who spelt their name as "Walklett". People would inadvertantly misspell the Walklet name this way - John's son states that this was of considerable annoyance to his father!

There is a possible match in the 1930 U.S. census records, as a John J. Walklet (aged 61) is listed. He was a retired widower living on Garfield Avenue in Trenton, New Jersey. The census cites John as immigrated in 1869 from England.

John married Agnes Mahlow , daughter of Charles Mahlow and Gussie Smith , on 24 Sep 1888 in Camden, New Jersey. Agnes was born in 1870.

Children from this marriage were:

+ 38 F    i. Emma Walklet .

John married Abigale E. Masserve in 1893. Abigale was born in 1861 and died in 1918.

Children from this marriage were:

+ 39 M    i. James Kenneth Walklet was born on 15 Oct 1896 and died in Dec 1979.

15. Charles T. Humboldt Walklet (James6, Thomas1) was born in Jun 1870 in New Jersey and died in 1951.

According to the wife of Charles' grandson , Charles T. Humbolt Walklet was always known as Charles Harry. She is unsure where the name "Charles T Humboldt" ties into things, although that is what the (Family?) Bible says. The IGI lists the birth of Charles Harry Walklet in June 1870 in New Jersey.

The 1930 U.S. census has an entry for a Harry C. Walklet aged 59 who was living at 422 Columbus Avenue, Dist. 57, Mercer Co., NJ. The census states that Harry was born in New Jersey, and that both his mother and father were born in England. Harry was working as an Engine Inspector (for the?)/State Highway. The census also states that Harry C. Walklet was married at the age of 23. His wife is listed as Lydia H. Walklet though, which does not tie up with the existing facts. Lydia was aged 63 at the time of the census and was married at the age of 27. Lydia's age does tie in well though with the known facts.

Also listed on the 1930 census were Charles H. Walklet (son) - he was aged 24 and single and also worked as an Inspector on the State Highway; Hazel Walklet (daughter; aged 23; single and working as a clerk at the Rubber Works); M. Donald (son; aged 20; single).

Their son John J. Walklet lived next door. The census lists John J. Walklet (aged 30), Catherine H. Walklet (aged 29), John J. Walklet (aged 7), Mary Eor C (aged 6) and
Richard H. Walklet (aged 4 years and 11 months).

Charles married Elizabeth Gompper on 1 May 1894 in Camden, New Jersey. Elizabeth was born in 1866 and died in 1931.

Children from this marriage were:

+ 40 F    i. Hazel Walklet was born on 5 Oct 1897 in New Jersey and died in Aug 1979 in Trenton, Merc., New Jersey.

+ 41 M    ii. John James Walklet was born on 3 Jun 1899 in New Jersey and died in Sep 1964.

+ 42 M    iii. Charles Harry Walklet was born on 17 Feb 1905 in New Jersey and died on 12 Feb 1998 in Naples, Collier, Florida.

+ 43 M    iv. Mercer Donald Walklet was born on 28 Sep 1909 in New Jersey and died on 11 Dec 1990 in Ohio.

16. Bertha Jane Walklet (James6, Thomas1) was born in 1872 and died in 1873.

17. Mercer Beasley Walklet (James6, Thomas1) was born on 20 Jun 1874 in Chambersburg, Mercer, New Jersey and died in 1940.

Mercer B. Walklet is listed on the 1930 U.S. census as being 57 years old and living in New Jersey.

18. Sidney Rutter (Jane Walklet7, Thomas1) was born in 1870 in Longport, Staffordshire.

19. Maud Rutter (Jane Walklet7, Thomas1) was born in 1872 in Longport, Staffordshire.

20. Frederick William Rutter (Jane Walklet7, Thomas1) was born in 1875 in Hanley, Stoke-On-Trent, Staffordshire.

The 1901 census shows Frederick W. Rutter as being aged 25 and lists him as being born in Hanley, Staffordshire. He was working as a printer in Aston, Birmingham. His address was 79 Burlington Road, and he was living there with his wife Caroline (also aged 25). Caroline was also born in Hanley, Staffordshire.

Frederick married Caroline Sherratt in 1900 in Stoke-On-Trent, Staffordshire. Caroline was born in 1875 in Hanley, Stoke-On-Trent, Staffordshire.

Marriage Notes: Frederick William Rutter married Caroline Sherratt in the third quarter of 1900 in the district of Stoke T. (Vol. 6b Page 400).

21. Flora Rutter (Jane Walklet7, Thomas1) was born in 1877 in Hanley, Stoke-On-Trent, Staffordshire.

22. Albert E. Rutter (Jane Walklet7, Thomas1) was born in 1879 in Hanley, Stoke-On-Trent, Staffordshire.

23. Thomas Albert Walklet (Albert9, Thomas1) was born in May 1869 in Longbridge Hays, Staffordshire and died on 28 Sep 1935.

Thomas was born in May 1869, and was the eldest child of Albert and Susan who had married earlier that year.

Thomas Albert is listed on the 1871 census ("Tho. A.") as being two years old and born in Bradwell Wood. He was living at the family home at 107 Bradwell Wood in Wolstanton Chatterley.

The census of 1881 lists Tom as being twelve years old, although this is incorrect - Tom would have been eleven at the time. Tom's brother Harry also has an incorrect age on this census entry. This census documents Tom Walklate (misspelt) as living at 87 Stafford Street, Stoke-upon-Trent with his family. Tom was already working as a "Potters Half Timer". The entry notes that Tom was born in Longbridge, Staffordshire, which was where his mother Susan was born.

Tom is reputed to have set out for America to build railroad, and Tom supposedly made a large fortune associated with Coney Island. Tom's relocation to America is backed up by the U.S. Census data and several shipping records from Ellis Island. If the link between Tom's father Albert and James Walklet is correct and they were brothers, then Tom's uncle James would have already emigrated to the states one generation prior to Tom leaving. Presumably, this was a factor influencing Tom to leave for the States.

The U.S. Census of 1900 lists the actual year of Tom's emigration as being 1887. It notes that he was married to Annie, an Irish immigrant in 1890 and that they had five children between their marriage in 1890 and 1900. Unfortunately, Anna was the only child to survive. The 1900 census notes that Tom was living at 179 Broadway, Long Branch, Monmouth County, New Jersey with his wife and surviving daughter. A posting in a New Jersey newsgroup says that Long Branch is in Monmouth County on the north Jersey seashore near the most northerly end. It is located on the branchline of New Jersey Transit (former New York and Long Branch Railroad) that connects New York City with the coastal communities. The 1900 census does not list the occupation of Tom. It is possible that this railroad is the one which Tom was reputed to be involved with. Alternatively, as he is supposed to have made his fortune at Coney Island, it is possible that he was working there, as Coney Island was in its heyday around 1904.

The U.S. census of 1910 shows that Tom was still living in Long Branch, but lists his address as 133 Broadway. Tom lived there with his wife Annie and his daughter, also referred to as Annie. He was 41 by this time and was working as a Retail Merchant in Confectionary. Another Walklet descendent (of Thomas' younger brother Frederick) has independently mentioned that the "family business" was confectionary (although she notes that Thomas himself was a conductor on the railways for a time). The same descendent also notes that Thomas lost a significant amount of money in the Wall Street crash, which ties in with the reputed facts which (Thomas's brother) Harry's descendents have recalled.

A grandson of Thomas's brother James has suggested that the money later left in Thomas' estate was as a result of supermarkets and cinemas.

Tom is said to have travelled back to England quite often for visits. He is reputed to have bought furniture at the start of his trips back, before storing it and then selling it on at a profit before returning to the States. Tom is known to have left the States in 1919. He returned back to the States in 1920, and is recorded on 1st March, 1920 as disembarking from The Carmania. This sailed from Liverpool to Ellis Island, and Tom is documented as "returning home" to his address in Long Branch, New Jersey. He had $600 in his possession, well in excess of the mandatory $50. He is noted as being in good health, being 5'11" tall, having a fair complexion, grey hair and blue eyes. The record states that he was born in Burslem (although it was actually Longbridge Hays). The 1920 census shows that Tom was still living at 133 Broadway with his wife and daughter. By this time he was working as a Railroad Conductor.

Tom travelled back to England on at least one another occasion, as he appears in the Immigration Records of Ellis Island once more on 8th March, 1922. This time, he was returning to the States having sailed from Southampton on board The Olympic, the sister ship to The Titanic. The entry has a written annotation stating that he was in the States "to 1921", and notes that he was there previously for 35 years. The latter statement ties in with the 1900 census note stating that Tom emigrated to America in 1887. The shipping record documents his home as being at 153 Broadway, Long Branch, New Jersey - maybe this should be 133 Broadway as per the 1920 census. Tom's birthplace is correctly noted as being Longbridge Hays on this record. He is noted as being married - presumably still to Annie his Irish wife.

Thomas Walklet was buried in Hartshill Cemetery in Stoke-on-Trent, and he had a lead coffin. At his funeral, a red carpet was laid from the chapel to the burial site, and the path was strewn with flowers. Some people from America attended the funeral. Tom and his wife Annie share the same grave. There is a marble cross which has the words "In Loving Memory of Annie" on it, and on the stone below the words read "Beloved Wife of Thomas A. Walklet & devoted mother of Anna Walklet of 209 High St. Fenton who died July 29th 1932 aged 66 years." Under this are the words "Also the above Thomas Albert Walklet who died Sep 28th 1935 aged 66 years. Rest In Peace." There is also a small memorial piece which reads "We may be far away loved ones but sweet memory of you darlings will last till we meet again in heaven. Nan + Cony." There is also an inscription on a small vase which reads "Gone But Not Forgotten. Au Revoir". Thomas' death is listed in the third quarter of the 1935 GRO Death Index (District: Stoke T.; Vol. 6b; Page 223). Thomas' death certificate states that he was living at 209 High Street, Fenton at the time of his death. This was also the address noted on his wife Annie's death certificate in 1932. Thomas' profession is noted as Retired Railway Conductor, and the cause of death is listed as 1(a) Hoematemosis (b) Carcinoma Stomach. The informant of his death was J. Templeman, brother-in-law of 14 Park Avenue, Shelton, Stoke-on-Trent.

Thomas' will stated that his money should go into a fund (Constance Ramuz and Anna Walklet Trust) for the duration of his daughter Anna's life, with Anna living off the interest. Upon her death, it was to be divided out amongst the living relatives. The Attorney At Law was Harvey G. Hartman. A letter addressed to Thomas's nephew Harry Walklet dated 9 April, 1952 stated:
"This trust, which had a recent market value of approximately $66,000, will terminate on the death of Anna Walklet, one of the beneficiaries. The assets comprising the principal of the trust will be divided into seven equal parts, five parts to be distributed to the testator's brothers or sisters who survived the testator and Anna Walklet, or if they survived the testator and predecceased Anna WAlklet, to their issue per stripes, one part to be distributed in equal shares to the children of your father, Harry Walklet, Sr. surviving at the death of Anna Walklet, and one part for Miss Ramuz. Should Miss Ramuz fail to survive Miss Walklet, her share will be distributed equally to the survivors of five brothers and sisters, namely, Emma Massey, James Walklet, Blanche Templeman, Mabel Cross and Frederick Walklet.
Correspondence of a similar nature to that we sent you was sent to your sister, Mabel Walklet Thornton, and your brother, John Walklet, Sr., and has been returned by the English postal authorities marked "Gone away". We wonder if you would be so good as to advise us of their present addresses if they are known to you."

A descendent of Thomas' brother Frederick (one of the brothers referred to in the letter of April 1952) has written that there was a great deal of complication when Thomas died because all his money was left in trust to look after Nan. After Nan died, the money was used to look after the companion until she died. Only then was it paid to the surviving relatives. Thomas Graham Walklet had to go to the American Consul in London with the rest of the family to deal with all the paperwork. The legal technicalities of Thomas' will was dealt with by a company called Harvey J. Hartman in Long Branch, New Jersey.

There has been a lot of speculation as to who "Connie Ramms" was. Facts on the letter from April 1952 show that this would have been Constance Ramuz. It has been said that Connie Ramms was a mistress of Thomas, although it is more likely that she was the nurse who looked after Thomas' daughter Nan. This is borne out by the inscription on Thomas' headstone from Nan + Cony; it is unlikely that a daughter would be on the same inscription as a mistress! The Ellis Island website has the following information about Constance Ramuz:
Arrived New York, 1906 - Aged 28;
Name: Ramuz, Constance;
Ethnicity: Switzerland, German;
Place of Residence: New York;
Date of Arrival: August 18, 1906;
Age on Arrival: 28y;
Ethnicity: F;
Marital Status: S;
Ship of Travel: S.S. La Touraine;
Port of Departure: Le Havre, Seine-Inferior, France;
Occupation: Nurse;
Arrived by herself with $87;
Previously been in New York for 14 years prior to this;
Joining her friend Mrs. Gaitz, 305 W 42th Str., New York.
A descendent of Thomas' brother Frederick stated that Thomas' daughter Anna was a "simple soul", and that Thomas looked after her. He also paid for a companian for her - a Frenchwoman who was possibly called Madame Moller. The French suggestion could be borne out by Constance being noted as being Swiss (hence French speaking depending on the region of Switzerland). The fact that Constance's occupation was that of Nurse further bears out the suggestion that she looked after Anna and was not a mistress!

Thanks to the hard work of one of Thomas' great-nieces, the Stoke-on-Trent City Council have been forced to re-instate Thomas' headstone after their poorly handled attempts to "make safe" many of the plots in the city.

Thomas married Annie Unknown in 1890 in New Jersey. Annie was born in Feb 1867 in Ireland and died on 29 Jul 1932 in Fenton, Stoke-On-Trent, Staffordshire.

Annie emigrated from Ireland to the States in 1884, and she married Thomas Walklet in New Jersey in 1890. She is listed on the U.S. Census of 1900 at 179 Broadway, Long Branch, New Jersey where she lived with her husband and one surviving daughter Anna. The couple had lost four other children between their marriage in 1890 and the time of the 1900 census. Annie's parents are listed as being born in Ireland.

The U.S. Census of 1910 taken on 5th April of that year shows Annie as living at 133 Broadway with her husband Thomas and daughter Annie. Her age is listed as 45 on this census, whereas it was listed as 33 on the 1900 census, so one of the entries is incorrect.

Annie was still living at this address at the time of the 1920 U.S. Census. She does not appear in the shipping records with her husband Tom when he visited England in 1919 and 1921, so she presumably stayed in New Jersey during her husband's visits.

Annie shares the same grave as her husband Thomas. There is a marble cross which has the words "In Loving Memory of Annie" on it, and on the stone below the words read "Beloved Wife of Thomas A. Walklet & devoted mother of Anna Walklet of 209 High St. Fenton who died July 29th 1932 aged 66 years." Annie's death is entered in the third quarter of the 1932 GRO Death Index (District: Stoke T.; Vol. 6b; Page 202). Under the inscription for Annie are the words "Also the above Thomas Albert Walklet who died Sep 28th 1935 aged 66 years. Rest In Peace." There is also a small memorial piece which reads "We may be far away loved ones but sweet memory of you darlings will last till we meet again in heaven. Nan + Cony." This is from his daughter Anna (known as "Nan").

Children from this marriage were:

24. (Ann) Emma Walklet (Albert9, Thomas1) was born in 1870 in Longbridge Hays, Staffordshire.

Emma is listed on the 1871 census as being three months old and born in Bradwell Wood. She was living at the family home at 107 Bradwell Wood in Wolstanton Chatterley. Her entry reads "Ann. E."; she is presumed to have used the name Emma in preference to Ann. This is based on the fact that the age of "Ann. E." ties in with subsequent records for Emma on records such as the 1881 census.

Emma was ten years old at the time of the 1881 census and was living with her family at 87 Stafford Street, Stoke-upon-Trent. She is listed as being born in Longbridge, Staffordshire.

There is an entry in the IGI for the christening of an Emma Walklet on 08 Oct 1882 in Hanley. This Emma's parents are listed as Albert Walklet and Susan. If this is "our" Emma, then she would have been around twelve when she was christened. This is probable, as there is an entry for the christening of Ann Eliza Walklet on the same day. The two sisters were likely to have been baptised together.

I have not been able to find an entry for Emma on the 1891 or 1901 census to date.

The entry for Emma's marriage exists in the GRO Marriages Index in the third quarter of 1904 (District: Stoke T.; Vol. 6b; Page 393). Emma would be in her thirties by this time.

Emma's father Albert died in 1912, and as Albert's eldest daughter, Emma was listed as the informant on the certificate - "E. Massey, Present At The Death, 73 Elgin Street".

Emma was still alive as of 1935, as she is listed as being a surviving sister in the will of Thomas Albert Walklet.

25. Harry Walklet (Albert9, Thomas1) was born in 1874 in Stoke, Staffordshire.

Harry's age of 25 on the 1901 census, and his age of 22 on his marriage certificate in 1898 would suggest that Harry's birth year was 1876. However, the record of Harry on the 1881 census has his birth year down as being 1874. This ties in with a possible match in the Births, Marriages and Deaths Index in the fourth quarter of 1874 (6b/250). The 1881 census has his surname as being "Walklate". It is our Harry though, as the head of the house is Albert (which ties in with the information on Harry's marriage certificate), and there is a brother Thomas in the house too. The census entry for Harry shows him living at 87 Stafford Street with his family and notes that he was born in Stoke.

Harry is reputed to have set off for America with his brother Tom. However, Thomas is known to have arrived in the U.S. in 1887 which would presumably be way too early in Harry's life for them to have left together. It is more likely that Harry set off later to join his brother in the States, as this is what happened with Thomas' other brothers James and Frederick. In any case, Harry only made it as far as Liverpool before deciding to return home. It is fortunate for Harry's descendents that he decided to turn back else we would not be here now! It is most likely that Harry attempted this in the 1890s; he was living at 62 Elgin Street at the time of the 1891 census (aged 16; born Stoke; occupation of Potters Printer). He had returned to Stoke by 1898 as that is the year of his marriage to Catherine. The associated marriage certificate notes that Harry was a Bricklayer and that he lived at 50 Elgin Street, Shelton.

The 1901 census has Harry Walklet down as being married, aged 25 and head of the household at 56 Beresford Street, Shelton. He was working as "Lamplighter Gas W" and is noted as being born in Stoke-on-Trent. Also at the address is his wife Catherine Walklet (nee Tams). The online census also has 16 day old "Davis" - this is an error in the online version of the census, and should really be Doris.

Harry Walklet's job as a lamplighter entailed lighting the street gas lamps using a large pole. Unfortunately he was fond of the drink and his wife Catherine used to find him lying drunk in the street, whereupon she took the pole and finished lighting the gas lamps.

The family had moved to Cauldon Road by 1907 at the latest; Harry was still working as a lamplighter in that year, as recorded in the Potteries, Newcastle and District Directory. The book records the inhabitants of the area, their address and their professions. Harry is erroneously recorded as "Henry Walklate", although it is definitely "our" Harry, as the given address is 69 Cauldon Road, Shelton. It is this address that is recorded on the birth certificate of their son Harry which was registered on 16 March 1908.

As Charlie, the youngest son of Harry Walklet, was born in 1915, and as his wife Catherine had married her second husband and had his child sometime around 1920, it is possible that Harry died sometime between 1915 and 1920. Furthermore, Harry's eldest son Tom was spared going into the army in the war and worked in the mines instead - this was because his father had died and as the eldest son, he was the principal breadwinner for the family.

Harry is known to have definitely been deceased by 1922, as he is noted as deceased on his daughter Doris's marriage certificate. To date there are no obvious entries for Harry's death in the records of the General Records Office between 1915 and 1922.

Harry married Catherine Ryles Tams , daughter of Robert Tams and Mary Booth , on 27 Aug 1898 in St Peters Church, Stoke. Catherine was born in 1879 in Hanley, Stoke-On-Trent, Staffordshire and died on 6 Apr 1952.

Marriage Notes: Harry Walklet and Catherine Tams were aged 22 and 19 respectively at the time of their marriage. Harry's surname was taken down as being "Walklate", and Catherine's middle name is spelt "Riles" on the certificate. Harry was working as a bricklayer and living at 50 Elgin Street, Shelton at the time, while Catherine was at 56 Beresford Street, Shelton. The couple's fathers are noted as being Albert Walklate (potter) and Robert Tams (painter). Witnesses to the marriage were John George Rowley and Mary Edna Tams (either the bride's sister or her mother, as they were both names Mary). Edmund Spink married the couple.

The 1881 census shows one-year-old Catherine living at 19 Derby Street with her parents Robert and Mary. Catherine's grandaughter wrote that she "originated from good stock and rode by horse and carriage. Her family owned property on the main Stoke Road near Cauldon Road. She married Harry Walklet and reared sixteen children, some beng adopted."

The 1891 census shows "Catherine R." to be living at the family home at 31 Rectory Road, Hanley as an unmarried 11 year old scholar.

The 1901 census lists Catherine Walklet as being the wife of Harry Walklet and living at 56 Beresford Street, Shelton. This was given as Catherine's address at the time of their marriage, as Harry was living at 50 Elgin Street. Catherine was aged 21 on the 1901 census and is noted as being born in Hanley. The online census also has 16 day old "Davis" who is really her first child Doris. In 1908 when Harry was born, they were living at 69 Cauldon Road, Shelton, Stoke-on-Trent.

I am told that Catherine had a hard life with Harry Walklet. She subsequently married Arthur Fieldhouse. Catherine lived at 23 Elgin Street in 1935, as this was the year her grandaughter Patricia Walklet was born. At the time, her son Harry Walklet and his wife Marjorie were living with Catherine at 23 Elgin Street before they moved to their own house at 80 Thornton Road, Shelton. Catherine herself moved to 116 Thornton Road, Shelton later.

A piece of guttering hit Catherine on the head which led to her being bedridden for the last fourteen years of her life. Catherine is buried in Hanley Cemetry with her second husband Arthur and her gravestone reads:"Arthur Fieldhouse 116 Thornton Rd Shelton Died May 29 1939 aged 68 also his beloved wife Catherine R. Fieldhouse died April 6 1952 aged 72".

26. James Walklet (Albert9, Thomas1) was born in 1879 in Hanley, Staffordshire and died in 1944.

James' grandson states that he was known as Jim. There is a likely entry for the birth of James Walklet in the first quarter of the BMD Index for 1879 (6b/209). The census of 1881 notes that James was two years old and was living at the family home at 87 Stafford Street, Stoke-upon-Trent. He was noted as being born in Hanley. James' surname is incorrectly spelt "Walklate".

At the time of the 1891 census, James was living at 62 Elgin Street and was noted as being born in Hanley. He was a 12 year old scholar at the time.

There is no obvious entry for Jim on the 1901 census. Another grandson notes that James fought in the Boer War and had his horse shot out from underneath him.

Jim married Carrie early in 1903 (GRO Marriages Index - District: Stoke T.; Vol: 6b Page: 328). James had a son in the third quarter of 1903; the GRO Births Index lists James Albert Walklet born in Stoke-on-Trent (District: Stoke T.; Vol: 6b Page: 256?). The child's middle name is that of James' father - Albert.

James' grandson is not aware of James travelling to the States. However, a James Walklet does appear on the Immigration Records of Ellis Island, New York on 13th June, 1906. He was a resident of Hanley and was aged 27 at the time. The age ties in with James' birth year, making it a reasonable assumption that this entry relates to "our" James. James was noted as being married and travelled on board The Caronia.

James is thought to be on the "Original Walklets" photo, along with his wife. His grandaughter told her daughter that James was involved with horses - he had a "black boys" (a horse?) called Sixpence and one possibly called Christmas. He also drove a large car with running boards.

He was still alive as of 1935, as he is listed as being a surviving brother in the will of Thomas Albert Walklet (this will also presumably left further estate which was distributed in the 1970s upon the death of Thomas' daughter Anna). According to his grandson, Jim had a horse-drawn fruit, vegetable and game business. Another grandson recalls that James ran a greengrocers in Wakes Walk and had a horse-drawn card to haul the produce.

Jim's grandson has recalled that Jim and his wife lived in Chell and is fairly sure that they both died there.

James married Caroline Davies in 1903 in Stoke, Staffordshire.

Marriage Notes: Jim married Carrie early in 1903 (GRO Marriages Index - District: Stoke T.; Vol: 6b Page: 328).

Caroline was known as Carrie. Her grandaughter told her daughter that Carrie was a very good seamstress and that she once went to the local market with her to buy fabric.

James' wife looked after two of her grandchildren when their mother died; various people in the family looked after them until their father - Cyril - married his second wife Doreen.

27. Blanche Elizabeth Walklet (Albert9, Thomas1) was born in 1881 in Hanley, Stoke-On-Trent, Staffordshire.

At the time of the 1891 census, Blanche was living at 62 Elgin Street and was noted as being a ten year old scholar who was born in Hanley.

Blanche was aged 20 and was still single in 1901 - the census entry of that year also records that she was living with her parents at 50 Elgin Street. The Free BMD project lists a marriage in the second quarter of 1902 for Blanche Elizabeth Walklet in Stoke-on-Trent.

Blanche is refered to as Blanche Templeman in correspondence (1952) relating to the will of her brother Thomas Albert Walklet (died 1935). There is a possiblility that this was Blanche's second marriage, with the first one being to someone with the name of Taylor.

Blanche married J. Templeman in 1902.

The informant on the death certificate of Thomas Albert Walklet (1935) was J. Templeman, brother-in-law of 14 Park Avenue, Shelton, Stoke-on-Trent. Mr. Templeman is thought to have been a photographer in Hanley.

28. Ann Eliza Walklet (Albert9, Thomas1).

The IGI Lists the christening of Ann Eliza Walklet, daughter of Albert Walklet and Susan:
Ann Eliza Walklet
Chr. 08 Oct 1882 Hanley
(daughter of) Albert Walklet & Susan
- and -
Emma Walklet (Ann's older sister)
c. 08 Oct 1882, Hanley
(daughter of) Albert Walklet & Susan.

Ann does not appear on the 1891 census entry for the family at their home at 62 Elgin Street, so it is presumed that she died before reaching the age of nine. Furthermore, Ann is not listed as one of the siblings of Thomas Albert Walklet on his will, further adding credence to the hypothesis that she died at a young age.

Ann married (name unknown) in 1888 in Stoke-On-Trent, Staffordshire.

Marriage Notes: There is an entry for the marriage of Annie Eliza Walklet in Stoke-on-Trent in the third quarter of 1888, although that would make Eliza around six at the time of her wedding!

29. Emmie Walklet (Albert9, Thomas1) was born in 1883 in Hanley, Stoke-On-Trent, Staffordshire.

At the time of the 1891 census, Emily Walklet was living at 62 Elgin Street with her family. She is listed as being an eight year old scholar who was born in Hanley.

Emmie was aged 18 at the time of the 1901 census and was living at the family home at 50 Elgin Street.

30. Mabel Walklet (Albert9, Thomas1) was born in 1889 in Hanley, Stoke-On-Trent, Staffordshire.

The Free BMD Project lists a likely match for the likely birth of Mabel in the second quarter of 1879 (6b 207).

The 1891 census lists Mabel as being two years old and as living at the family home at 62 Elgin Street.

The 1901 census notes that Mabel was living with her parents at 50 Elgin Street and that she was twelve years old at the time.

Mabel married in the first quarter of 1910 (GRO Marriages Index - Stoke T. 6b 346).

Mabel was still alive as of 1935, as she is listed as being a surviving sister in the will of Thomas Albert Walklet.

Mabel married Cross in 1910 in Stoke-On-Trent, Staffordshire.

31. Frederick Arthur Walklet (Albert9, Thomas1) was born in 1891 in Hanley, Stoke-On-Trent, Staffordshire.

Frederick does not appear on the 1891 census as it was conducted early in the year of his birth. The Free BMD Project has a likely match for the birth of Frederick in the fourth quarter of 1891 (6b/909). This ties in with the 1901 census information, which notes that Frederick was nine years old at the time. The 1901 census also lists Frederick as living with his family at 50 Elgin Street, which is in Shelton.

Frederick's father Albert died in the first quarter of 1912, and Frederick and his mother travelled to America in the subsequent year. Frederick appears in the Immigration Records for Ellis Island, New York on 3rd September, 1913, having sailed there from Liverpool on board The Carmania. He was 21 at the time and is noted as being single. The documents state that he was joining his brother Thomas A. Walklet of Broadway, Long Branch, New Jersey and that Frederick and his mother Susan (who accompanied him on the voyage) arrived in America with $100. Frederick was noted as being 5'8" tall and in good health, and of having a dark complexion, with dark hair and blue eyes. He is documented as being born in Shelton.

Frederick came back to England and married Beatrice Alice Johnson. They lived the rest of their lives in Newcastle.

Frederick was still alive as of 1935, as he is listed as being a surviving brother in the will of Thomas Albert Walklet.

Frederick married Beatrice Allen Johnson .
