33. Frederick Mercer Walklet (Thomas Frederick13, James6, Thomas1) was born on 17 Jun 1888 and died on 11 Oct 1968.

One of Frederick's grandaughters recalls that when Frederick was young he was supposedly quite a daredevil. He used to race motorcycles in some sort of pit where they would ride the motorcycles around in a circle and up the side of the pit so they were almost parallel to the ground. He lost his right arm above the elbow this way! This did not slow him down though, as his grandaughter recalls that Frederick was always very active.

Frederick married Vidella May Ennis on 13 Dec 1909.

Frederick married Helen E McKeown on 24 Jan 1920.

35. Frank Thomas Walklett (Thomas Frederick13, James6, Thomas1) was born on 22 Jul 1893 in New Jersey and died in 1961.

Frank Thomas Walklet added the double "t" to his surname as he started in high school. Frank's son recalls that Frank's family were always mad about the way he signed his name. Frank went by both of his names - Tom and Frank.

Frank's son recalls that Frank was a big pool affectionado (like his own father Tom) in his youth. He was to go to dental school at Case Western Reserve in Cleveland but ran away his first year with a friend. They travelled to Texas by shooting pool, although their luck ran out and they ended up digging ditches in Texas. Frank's father somehow found them and had them return to Cleveland on the condition that they would take up a trade. Frank's son writes that this probably did not work out as Frank was a salesman for the rest of his life, after a short tour as a window dresser in downtown Cleveland.

Frank is also known to have attended the wedding of his nephew Mercer Allison Walklet.

Hazel's son notes that the Kniselys moved from Pennsylvania in 1804 and started the present town of New Philadelphia, Ohio. There is still a plaque in the centre of the town denoting the foundation of the town by the Kniselys.

There is a Hazel Walklet listed on the Social Security Index (1897-1979); she was last resident in New Jersey and was also issued with a social security number in New Jersey. If this is the correct Hazel, it would suggest she never married, or else married and then reverted back to her maiden name.

41. John James Walklet (Charles T. Humboldt15, James6, Thomas1) was born on 3 Jun 1899 in New Jersey and died in Sep 1964.

There is a Katherine H. Walklet listed on the 1930 U.S. Census who lived in New Jersey. However, her age is 41 which does not tie in with the existing birth year for Katherine.

The Social Security Index lists a Katherine Walklet 1896-1986 who was last resident in Connecticut and who was issued with a social security number in New Jersey:

Katherine WALKLET - U.S. Social Security Death Index

44. Anna T. Walklet (Thomas Albert23, Albert9, Thomas1) was born on 13 Apr 1896 in New Jersey and died on 15 Jun 1972 in New York.

Anna is listed in the 1900 U.S. Census and is noted as living with her parents Thomas and Annie Walklet at 179 Broadway, Long Branch, New Jersey. She was four years old at the time. She is the only surviving child to be found so far for Tom and Annie; four of her siblings died between 1890 and 1900.

The 1910 U.S. Census refers to her as Annie, as opposed to Anna, and lists her address as 133 Broadway, Long Branch, New Jersey. She was fourteen years old at the time. Annie was still at this address at the time of the 1920 census, although this lists her as being 23 years old. She is referred to by the 1920 census as "Nan" as opposed to Anna or Annie.

Anna's mother Annie died in 1932, and her father Thomas died in 1935. There is an inscription on their grave which reads "We may be far away loved ones but sweet memory of you darlings will last till we meet again in heaven. Nan + Cony." The Stoke-on-Trent City Council have Anna noted as being the last known person responsible for Thomas' grave. Her contact details are cited as being Anna Walklet, 71 Fifth Avenue, Long Branch, New Jersey.

It seems that Anna never married, as there is an entry in the U.S. Social Security Death Index which ties in with "our" Anna Walklet who we know to be born in April 1896. Her last residence was at 11743 Huntington, Suffolk, New York. According to the entry, Anna was issued with her social security in New Jersey in 1963.

A descendent of Anna's uncle (Frederick Walklet) believes that Anna was a "simple soul", and that she never married. Her father Thomas looked after her all of her life, and paid for a companian for her - a Frenchwoman who was possibly called Madame Moller. This may explain the "Au Revoir" inscription on Anna's father Thomas's headstone.

Tom was called up for the army in the war, but as his father was dead and he was the principal breadwinner (being the eldest son), he was allowed to work in the mine.

Tom is reputed to have asked his uncle Tom to set him up in business, seeing as Tom had made a lot of money in the States. Tom then took his nephew out and bought him ladders and other equipment and told him he was now set up as a windowcleaner!

49. Harry Walklet (Harry25, Albert9, Thomas1) was born on 28 Feb 1908 in 69 Cauldon Road, Shelton, Stoke-on-Trent and died on 13 Apr 1965.

Harry Walklet was born while his parents lived at 69 Cauldon Road, Shelton. He lived in Elgin Street for a time with his wife Marjorie before moving to 80 Thornton Road sometime around the autumn of 1935. Harry was a heavy smoker - he even smoked while he ate. Harry worked for Betty Plants as a van driver and also for W. H. Smith and the Trent Tobacco company as a Tobacco Traveller. Harry used to sing and nobody dared to speak while he sang.

He made all kind of things in his life - when his daughters Pat and Maureen were small he made them a large dolls house and a shop with a counter. He made easels and rocking horses. He also made his own moulds and made ornaments such as Santa Clauses and wishing wells. He also used to make gifts to sell on to people when he was sales repping for the tobacco company; his daughter Lynda used to help him by taking a cup and saucer and filling the cup with crepe paper and sweets, then wrapping it all in cellophane. Harry Walklet's nephew recalls that he once gave him a railway engine which he thinks Harry made himself and which he treasured for years.

Harry bought a chassis and built a caravan which was towed out to Wales (without any brakes!) where his daughter remembers that they had lovely holidays. After a few years Harry sold his caravan and Harry and his brother Albert bought a new Bluebird Pathfinder caravan and called it Albhar - half Albert and half Harry. Harry and his brother Albert were very close.

During the 1940s, a commercial vehicle was not allowed to be used for private use or carry unauthorised persons. Harry at the time was working for W. H. Smiths and he used to take his daughters Pat and Maureen out on his delivery journeys. When he saw the police, Pat and Maureen used to have to hide on a ledge above the cab of the van. Once or twice he took his mother Catherine out for a treat; he also carried wood and glass home for a greenhouse which he built at 80 Thornton Road, Shelton. He used his works van to carry the materials and the neighbours reported him to the police - one morning the police were waiting for him. Pat remembers that Harry put a notice in the front room window, heading it "To The Vile Persecutors of Thornton Road". Harry was also fined three times for speeding! A name and address relating to W.H.Smith was found in Harry and Marjorie's ledger: "C. J. Williams, WHS Transport, Portugal St., London".

Harry died while having an operation for lung cancer. His family always remembered him wearing a bandage around his wrist. This was supposedly because he had fallen off a roof when he was young and trying to fetch a ball. He had broken his wrist and the break had not been treated at the time. The subsequent operation left his wrist so badly scarred that he permanently wore the bandage. However, when he died and the bandage was removed, there was no scar present.

Harry was colour-blind, as was his brother Jack.

Marjorie with Harry and Pat

Harry married Marjorie Bradbeer , daughter of Harry John Bradbeer and Mary Ann Hitchen , in Jan 1935 in St. Judes, Shelton, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire. Marjorie was born on 27 Apr 1912 in 23 Nicholls Street, Stoke-Upon-Trent and died on 23 Aug 1988 in Hartshill, Stoke-On-Trent.

Marjorie was baptised at St. Peters, Stoke on 19th May 1912 - the sponsors were Harry John Bradbeer (her father), Hannah Hitchin (her aunt), and Mary Ann Bradbeer (her mother).

Marjorie fell into the canal at nine years of age and nearly drowned; her long hair floated on the water and a footballer jumped in and saved her. However, she couldn't hold a cup for five years afterwards, and the shock left her with St. Vitus Dance; she always suffered with her nerves after that and never went to school again. She was a good tennis player. She went into Service and was a good looking woman.
In her youth she was courting a young man who was a jockey. One day she arranged to meet the young man under the canal bridge at Sideway, Boothen. The young man arrived on a horse and a swan flapped its wings, startling the horse and causing it to rear up. The jockey hit his head on the bridge and fell off the horse into the canal and drowned.

Marjorie moved to 80 Thornton Road, Shelton in 1935 with her husband Harry and her eldest daughter, and she lived at this address until shortly before her death.

Marjorie's youngest daughter remembers that sometime around 1959/60, Marjorie used to have porcelain electrical connectors delivered from E & OA (Electrical and Ordinance A???) to her at home. She worked from home making up these components to earn extra money. This entailed putting brass barrels and screws into the components, and Marjorie's youngest daughter learnt what a gross was by the fact that Marjorie was paid for every 144 units she made.

Marjorie wrote the following in her ledger:
Favourite Verses-
"Sow a seed of kindness/In someone's heart each day/And in the garden of your life/The sun will come to stay.//Do not let the passing trouble/All your wide horizons fill/Though there's shadow in the valley/There is sunshine on the hill.//When things ain't what they ought to be/And riches are awful few/Just stick a feather in last years hat/And kid yourself it's new."

Marjorie is buried in Hartshill Cemetry and the grave reads:
"In Loving Memory of Marjorie Walklet (nee Bradbeer) who fell asleep on August 23rd 1988 aged 76 years. Resting with her parents, sadly missed by all her family. God Bless You. All roads are one in the end."

Cyril was one of the beneficiaries of Thomas Albert Walklet's will - Thomas would have been his uncle.

Cyril made replica fairground models in his shed once he had retired - Waltzers and big wheels - and a newspaper article was written about him. The exhibits were displayed in a museum in Rhyl for a while.

He eventually moved into a retirement bungalow in Abergele sometime around the late 80s.
